The musical Aida received its German première at the Colosseum Essen in 2003. Composed by Sir Elton John & Tim Rice, the musical is based on Giuseppe Verdi's opera first performed in 1869. For the two years that the musical played in Essen, visitors to the Colosseum could appreciate the building façade illuminated so memorably by Mutzhas.
